Life in Pleasure

Title: Life in Pleasure

Video, duration 6 minutes, Hydra-Hamburg,  2024

The title “Life in Pleasure” conjures images of comfort, enjoyment, and abundance, suggesting a lifestyle steeped in indulgence and contentment. Rooted in a Greek surrealist poem by Andreas Empiricos, it alludes to the creation of a utopian world state known as Octana. This utopia is characterized by an “erotic, Freudian philosophy” that prioritizes sexual desire and the spiritual function of poetry. Octana envisions a mental unity rather than a political one, celebrating the spiritual and ethnic identities of each individual while fostering a seamless brotherhood among nations and peoples.

However, this idyllic concept serves as an ironic allegory when juxtaposed with the grim reality depicted in a photograph of the war-torn city of Gaza. The stark contrast between the idealized notion of pleasure and the harsh realities of conflict and suffering highlights the complexities of human existence.

The artwork further incorporates elements such as Jeff Bezos’ vision of self-sustaining habitats in space, known as the O’Neill Cylinder, and dancing avatars

These elements add layers of symbolism and commentary, exploring themes of utopian ideals, the transformative effects of war, and the dangers of forgetting historical lessons. Additionally, the presence of the Flakturm IV in the urban landscape serves as a cautionary reminder of the enduring scars of war and the transformation of urban spaces over time. This historical landmark reflects the complex layers of history embedded in the built environment and prompts contemplation on memory, trauma, and the human cost of conflict.
